Baptism
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus says to his followers, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Ascension believes and teaches that baptism is a wonderful gift given by God. The benefit of baptism is forgiveness of sins and the promise of salvation in Jesus Christ. The Scriptures say, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16) Ascension further believes that people have a sinful nature from birth (Psalm 51:5, Ephesians 2:3), that Christ commanded all people to be baptized (Matthew 28:19), and that Christ specially invited children to come to Him (Luke 18:15-17). Therefore, we believe, teach and practice infant baptism.
Mara Hassenbein in the church office ((805) 495-0406; ) is our Baptism Coordinator. Please contact her to schedule your child’s/children’s baptism, or your own. You will be asked to complete a baptism worksheet. (Here are forms you may download: Infant/child baptism worksheet. Adult baptism worksheet.) After the baptism is scheduled, you will receive a phone call from an Ascension member who will schedule a visit in your home to explain baptism in the Lutheran church, bring you some educational materials to help you celebrate your child’s baptism in the future, and answer any questions you may have.
